Laurie Simmons: Color Pictures/Deep Photos 2007–2022

 

In “Color Pictures / Deep Photos 2007-2009,” Simmons reconfigures a photographic series she made a decade and a half ago. At the time, she downloaded and cut out images of women from amateur-porn websites, posed them in eerily lit sets alongside dollhouse furniture—tiny sinks, a toy lamp, a miniature piano—occasionally doodled or built-out decorations on their naked forms (painted polka-dot underwear, clay bras), and photographed the resulting tableaus. Meant to be printed out in a large-scale format, the series was, in the end, never officially shown, its source material perhaps considered out of step with Simmons’s more familiar midcentury imagery. Fifteen years later, the artist has returned to reconsider and play with these images once again, and we are now more than ready.

Ali Eyal: In the head's sunrise

​

Ali Eyal’s paintings are characterized by their intense subjectivity that bring forth fragmented narratives and surreal visual scenes and compositions. Eyal’s works piece together memories, dreams, and stories that reach into one another and across media, rendering incomprehensible violences and unfathomable events witnessed in the artist’s hometown, a place he calls small farm. Set against the impossible scale of calamity in war, Eyal gives curious attention to the intimate, and often absurd, accounts to be found in this concentrated space. An artist and poet, Eyal’s text is an extension of his drawings and a thread to his paintings that return as narrative links in his performances and videos.

“See you in Florida, a Vene-Rican Odyssey” invites visual artists to explore, through caricature, illustration, drawing or painting, the causes, vicissitudes, challenges and triumphs of the Puerto Rican and Venezuelan diasporas. Puerto Rican and Venezuelan diasporas in terms of their exodus from Venezuela, Puerto Rico and New York to Florida. At a time when even North Americans themselves do not cease to succumb to the tropical charm of “Sagüesera Mayamera", the Borimix 2022 art show wants to highlight how Venezuelans and Boricans have visibly increased their presence in multiple cities throughout the state of Florida. While many come to Miami directly from the towns and cities of Puerto Rico and Venezuela, others who had already settled in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, are leaving in increasing numbers for Kissimmee Florida, Jacksonville and other cities. It is clear that the current circumstances of departure, while sharing a certain urgency to LEAVE, reflect different discontents.

You Ni Chae: Fata Morgana

​

You Ni Chae makes intimately-scaled paintings where diffuse and layered pigment register subtle shapes and oscillating patches of light, suggesting the possibility of fuzzy forms emerging from rich ambient surfaces. Tawny reds, purple grays, and dusty blues glow next to luminous violet, electric turquoise and earthy green fields, with an unknown light source that pushes against the just-visible nub of the canvas. Her brushy, nearmonochrome paintings invite situations of undetermined, fluid and unutterable feeling. Despite this seemingly vague and doomed intention, Chae’s canvases are concise, cogent and present a convincing if indescribable visual narrative in color, scale and latent meaning.

Laura Sharp Wilson paints with acrylic on mulberry paper mounted on wood panels, creating vividly colored, precisely rendered works that draw on a visual language derived from the world of decorative arts. In this exhibition, botanical imagery predominates in compositions that are more ordered and simplified than in previous paintings. Patterns and motifs found in textiles, porcelain, and jewelry have long been a constant in Wilson’s surreal environments; forms are encircled, tethered, bound, or draped by cords, ribbons, ornamental beads, and thorny flowering vines.
